SAG Favorites

Awards season is heating up and the most recent addition is the Screen Actors Guild Awards from Sunday night.  I love the honor of these awards, from actors to actors.  You can feel the appreciation on both sides of these awards, and see that the winners really feel honored to win.  I decided to narrow it down and share my top 5 fashion winners of the night.

5. Emma Stone looks classic and gorgeous in this tea-length Alexander McQueen.  I also loved her swept-up hair and miniaudiere clutch.

 4.  It's all about the color - Emily Blunt takes a risk in gorgeous green by Oscar de la Renta.

 3.  I love the non-traditional silhouette of this Givenchy Haute Couture gown on Zoe Saldana.  The unique details and breezy sleeves make her look different than anyone else.

 2.  I have to credit Michelle Williams for sticking to her own style and personality this season.  This red Valentino is just right for her, and I am glad to see her wear a bright color for these awards.

 1.  I had to choose Natalie Portman for my top choice.  As soon as she came on screen, I just kept saying how much I loved her Giambattista Valli dress.  The bordeaux color is so amazing!

Karl's Collection

One of my favorite go-to fashion sites, Net-a-Porter, has been practically taken over by the launch of the new KARL by Karl Lagerfeld collection.  Karl is a true fashion icon, and this collection does his signature look and unique personality a lot of justice.  The Net-a-Porter site is full of not only the pieces of the collection, but also head-to-toe looks, video, and lots of Karl history.  Here are my favorite pieces in the collection.

From top to bottom, first is the signature tee, with Karl's picture.  Next up a great crossbody bag with zipper details.  Then my favorite two dresses - black sequins and a printed jersey dress.  And then the tote... I had to show the front and back of the tote - I love how it has 2 views of Karl himself!

Friday's Favorite Look 1.27

Have you seen the new Madewell Spring Lookbook?  I received their amazing foldout book in the mail last week and was dying over each and every look!  And they had a fabulous event at the SF store this week that I had to miss, but I heard (and saw the pics to prove it) that it was great.  This is one of my favorite looks - I couldn't take my eyes off this dress and the bright blue color is perfect for getting in the mood for Spring.  I love it paired with a denim jacket, and even though she is wearing gold sandals, I think this would also be great with boots for a transitional look.  It's only a matter of time before I go to the store and scoop up as much as I can of the new spring line.

Sundance Style

Of course in addition to the highlights of my trip to Sundance yesterday, I had to give a recap of Sundance style as well.  I love to see the stylish looks that come out despite the snow and cold weather, and there was a lot of both!  Check out these looks from the likes of Emma Roberts, Kate Bosworth, Michael Cera, Elizabeth Olson, and many more...

I was happy to include some stars that we saw... Kate Bosworth was spotted by my friends at the grocery store, we sat one table away from Kristen Bell and a group of celebs at dinner Saturday night, and Michael Cera was at the Q&A for his movie "The End of Love."  I also heard that Taylor Swift attended the premiere of "Ethel", which I saw on Saturday.  Stars... they're just like us!  Well, sort of...

Sundance 2012

Once again my annual trip to Sundance was an absolute blast.  I saw 4 fantastic movies, had 100% success rate with waitlisting, saw lots of snow, saw a few celebs, and had a wonderful time with friends.  Here are a few snapshots from the trip:

The official Sundance screen... here we go!

The waitlist line... sometimes friend, sometimes foe.

 Beautiful snow on the trees

Enjoying the snow with my friend Laura.  And wearing my favorite fur hat from Old Navy!

 That's right - #1 in the waitlist.

My Sundance outfit day #2: J.Crew red knit hat, navy scarf from my trip to Hong Kong, Marc by Marc Jacobs navy wool coat and green cardigan, Old Navy rockstar jeans, Sorel boots.

My new Sorel boots were perfect for all the snow in Park City.

Beautiful sunny day, with Laura and Rachel

Q&A after our 4th movie, "Save the Date"

Here's the lowdown on the movies we saw: "Ethel", an amazing documentary about Ethel Kennedy.  A must-see.  My second favorite was "Save and Date", shown in the Q&A pic above.  A great indie romantic dramedy.  Next up, "Lay the Favorite", a fast-moving gambling romp starring Bruce Willis and Rebecca Hall.  And lastly, "The End of Love" starring, written, and directed by Marc Webber.

The Perfect Yellow Dress

Is this the perfect yellow dress or what?!  I can't help but think about all the fantastic places I could wear this.  I spotted it today via email from Barney's - a sunny, gorgeous silk yellow dress from Martin Grant.  What a lovely thought on a rainy day!

Friday's Favorite Look 1.20

Today's look is all about cold weather, because this afternoon I am off to Sundance for the 9th time!  I am so excited - it's really my favorite trip of the year.  I will definitely be reporting back on the fashion I see there, as well as a download on the movies I see and star sightings.  I have packed my best cold weather outfits - cozy sweaters, my new Sorel boots, and lots of hats and scarves to bundle up with.  I heard it's already snowing in Park City!
Gwen Stefani wears a similar look to my traveling outfit today - warm sweater, skinny jeans (or leggings), and flat casual boots.  Love the bright scarf and sunglasses too.  Can't wait to get there... more to come on my trip!

Fashionable Read: A Vintage Affair

I just read a great (and very fashion-focused) book that I wanted to share!  "A Vintage Affair" by Isabel Wolff was recommended to me by my mom, and I really enjoyed reading it.  The story centers around a British woman who is opening her own vintage clothing shop, so it's full of fantastic designer clothes that she finds to sell in her shop.  The main character, Phoebe, has a background in auctions at Christie's so she really knows her stuff.  I loved reading about the clothing in her store, including designs by Chanel, Madame Gres, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, Balmain, and many more.  I also loved the collection of vintage prom dresses that seemed to have a magical effect on anyone that bought them!  I really wished that there was a store just like this here in San Francisco... I know I would shop there all the time.  Read this book - I highly recommend it!

Trends on the Red Carpet

After yesterday's best/worst on the Golden Globes red carpet, I thought I would follow up with some fabulous trends I saw.  They deserved their own post!  First up, I loved the return of headbands on the red carpet - best evidenced by Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron.  I didn't name Michelle as one of my favorites, but I did think she looked lovely.

In terms of color, I saw lots of blush tones, worn by Heidi Klum, Kate Beckinsale, Giuliana Rancic, Shailene Woodley, and Julie Bowen.  There was also a surprising amount of red - some women stay away from red so as not to clash with the carpet.  But both Dianna Agron and Reese Witherspoon looked great in this bold shade.

Lastly, I loved the natural hairstyles I saw on the red carpet.  I am sure that while I think they look natural, these women still had their hair done, but it's a great change of pace from all of the "done-up" hair that you usually see on red carpets.  Reese's hair above is a great example, as well as Kristen Wiig and Jessica Biel.

Golden Globes Rundown

So did you watch the Golden Globes last night?  I definitely did, and of course before I even watched the awards, I tuned in for the red carpet.  I had to share my favorites and not-so-favorites too, as well as some risk-takers.
Let's start with the good ones.  And there were actually a lot this year!  I absolutely loved Claire Danes' dress - she was my top choice of the evening.  Her J. Mendel dress was so unique and the back was stunning.  I also loved Diane Lane's gold dress (Reem Acra), Angelina Jolie's pop of red (Atelier Versace), and Natalie Portman's bright color (Lanvin).

Unfortunately there were 3 looks that I have to say I didn't like at all.  Elle MacPherson's dress was just way too much, too overdone.  Lea Michele's dress (Marchesa) was not a favorite either - very open and just all together not flattering.  And Jessica Biel's dress I wasn't a fan of either, the long sleeves really over-powered her.

I also have to mention a few ladies that took risks and went outside the box.  Sarah Michelle Gellar's tie-dye Monique Lhullier gown, who it seems people either loved or hated.  Charlize Theron in Dior, who looked fabulous but did have a large bow on her dress that could be tough for some.  Tina Fey, who rarely wears color, wore a beautiful bordeaux shade that she was definitely pulling off.  And Zooey Deschanel, who wore custom Prada that was perfect for her quirky style.

So that's that.  What about you - what were your favorites?  I must also say congrats to Octavia Spencer - I was so glad she won.  And Morgan Freeman receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award from Sidney Poitier brought me to tears.  Stay tuned tomorrow when I share some trends I saw on the red carpet.
